North Lake College formulated a leadership program which has enabled it to develop and keep its leadership pipeline stocked. The Blazer Academy of Supervisory Leadership is made up of several core classes, including negotiation, effective communication, performance management, and coaching. (I teach the performance management.) Twelve high-potential employees are chosen to participate in the year-long leadership program. They meet once a month and are mentored by other leaders in the organization. Many of the success metrics for the Blazer Academy are anecdotal, but a measureable impact has been shown in employee presentations. Participants create a Six-word story at the beginning of the program and then revise it at the end of the program, as seen in this video.
